Automotive Lust of the Day, Yeah, It’s Got a Hemi Edition: 1967 Dodge Coronet 500 Hemi Swap

Last updated on September 18, 2024

This Dodge caught my eye because it is the spitting image of a car that I passed on in the late ’80s. That car was also a 1967 Coronet 500 in light blue with Cragar rims but it deviated in three specific ways. Most noticeably it was a convertible that eliminated the well-done C pillar in the interest of open-top motoring. It was powered by an angry-sounding poly 318 that came from a hot rod 60 Plymouth that rusted away leaving the engine. it also had a newer four-speed installed. The same guy tried to sell me a 1967 Coronet 500 hardtop six years earlier that was turbine bronze with a black top and white interior. Someone swapped the original 318/automatic for a 340/4-speed. Those were the only Mopars I remember that guy having as he always had older Fords for sale. As cool as those cars were, they didn’t have an engine swap as interesting as the early Hemi swap in this Coronet. Early Hemis were more common than the later 426 engines but their size and weight make them unusual for a muscle car swap. This one appears well done and should be a reliable cruiser if not the fastest car on the block. The detailing in the engine compartment and of the chassis does not match the asking price. A bit of haggling and some effort on the underside and this could be a great car.
