The last thirty years have seen an unprecedented reduction in world poverty. Increased trade has dramatically reduced extreme poverty and inspired hope that poverty could be eradicated in our time. Covid has derailed this optimism and the extent of the damage is just becoming clear. The coming years are going to require reopening trade and managing the consequences of the terrible deals that were made during the pandemic.
