Two Wheel Lust of the Day, Hybrid Sports Bike Edition: 1975 Rickman CR900

Last updated on September 18, 2024

When Honda released the CB750, Kawasaki was already working on their own version of a four-cylinder 750cc version of the UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle). While Honda released an entire range of smooth four-cylinder models, Kawasaki started a superbike horsepower war by bringing out the Z1, a 903cc monster that was advertised as an alternative to the expensive and disappearing muscle cars of the era. The Z1 was a beast. It set several international records and was known as the fastest production motorcycle in the world. It did suffer from the common wet noodle frame that was a complaint of many early UJMs. Fortunately, Rickman had a solution. The maker of advanced off-road motorcycle frames also sold a line of beautifully crafted cafe racer frames that accepted a wide range of engines from Harleys to various English brands. The most exciting versions were those that accepted engines from the UJMs. The Rickman CR750 was the most common and refined but the CR900 was an exotic beast with enough power that stroker kits were not necessary for mortal riders. This example in Kawasaki green is an exceptionally clean example with a beautiful condition nickel-plated frame and perfect fiberglass bodywork. The components are all first-rate and the engine has a big bore kit and hot cams.

As exciting as this bike is, I’m holding out for a Rickman frame for the CBX engine I have stashed in the garage.
